We launched into our "Folktales and Fairy Tales" unit for both reading and writing. The students began with a discussion in reading about different elements that fairy tales have such as, magic, happy endings, good and bad characters, faraway places, etc. They then compared a variety of fairy tales from around the world to see what was similar and different.Taking what they had learned so far, the students began planning a fairy tale or folktale that they wanted to make a new version of in writing.
